Post-Hurricane Awning Repair

The most common cause of damage to awnings is storms and high winds. It seems so obvious but despite the awnings' visibility and attractiveness, lots of people tend to forget about them once installed, and it comes as somewhat of a surprise when damage occurs. Be prepared and either roll up, retract or remove them before hurricanes, storms or high winds blow in. Awning repairs, just like any other kind, can be an inconvenience to a homeowner, so be sure to take good care.

During major storms, residential areas can suffer pretty badly with houses unroofed, windows shattered and trees brought down. An awning repair job isn't likely to be a high priority for service professionals who will be keener to correct issues that bring about an improvement in the standard of living. Cosmetic repairs can be done way after the fact, but insurance inspections will need to be carried out as soon as possible after the damage occurs, dependant on the availability of very busy claims officers.

In the case of widespread, severe hurricane damage, the insurance companies' employees are run ragged. It sometimes means that replacement of broken additions to homes is automatic. But if yours have been assessed and awning repair is recommended, contact your dealer and arrange for someone to provide a free quotation. Do this as soon as possible because many of your neighbors will be doing the same thing and you'll be waiting in line for some time.

A hurricane can result in a need for remodelling, which may or may not be welcome depending on how you view it. Once you've done your awning repairs, cleaned up the garden, replaced the broken windows and straightened up the potted plants, you'll feel like your house has a new lease on life. You'll be more inclined to keep up the maintenance and you'll enjoy thinking of what else you can add to beautify your home.

If, post-hurricane, you've had to wait what seems like an eternity to have your awning repair done, consider taking it on as a DIY project. A shopping trip to your hardware will be most helpful and the sales assistant will be able to give you a few pointers. Check the Yellow Pages for companies that advertise in-store advisory services on various home improvement jobs. Call around to see who stocks the fabric you require, but most hardware stores will have the other basic requirements such as aluminum tubing, screws and cords.

Storms are never fun when the damage they cause is significant. You can always be thankful for the safety of your family; and little things like awning repairs and replacing broken glass are simply inconveniences that you'd like to do without.
